2010 - Girls Win National Gold

On the 12th of September 2010 Helen and Kathryn competed in the Senior National Kata Championships at High Wycombe.

They competed in Ju-No-Kata and won the Gold medal for the 2nd consecutive year. They have done extremely well and have progressed to a high standard. Their knowledge and understanding of Kata goes a long way and we hope to see them with their Dan grades (black belts) very soon in order to compete inter-nationally.

Everyone at the club would like to say a huge congratulations to the both of them for doing so well for the 2nd year running.

“The Colin Tupper award this year goes to Jacob Homan for a second year. Jacob is such an asset to the Club and exemplifies the community spirit, that this award celebrates. During the year he has continued to grow in confidence and supports not only the under 8’s class every week – but can be called on for any activity the Club takes part in.

During the year he regularly cycled to Selsey to help the main coach at an outreach class there. This showed not only a great commitment to the sport but also to the Coaches and the Club – he is a wonderful role model for others to emulate. He has continued in his own endeavours in judo around a busy year, taking his “A” levels. He is a cheerful and respected young man and the Club will miss him from September when he goes to University. I know he will keep up his judo whilst away and be a help to any other Club he goes to. We hope to see him on his holidays back in Chichester and feel proud that a little part of the Club ethos goes with him”.

Golden Girls Toast of Judo Club - and the City

Chichester can boast two national judo champions. Twins Kathryn and Helen Cartwright, members of Chichester Ronin Judo Club, won the junior title in juno kata at the National Kata Championships in High Wycombe. The girls also bagged silver in the katame-no-kata divisoin.

Helen and Kathyrn attend classes at the club, which meets on the permanent mat (dojo) at New Park Centre on Mondays and Fridays. "We went along to the try a sport festival in Oaklands Park two years agao, saw judo for the first time and were encouraged to give it a go and we haven't looked back since!" Helen said. They paid tribute to their parents, who drive them to the club and take them around the country to major events and to train.

Senior club coach Gary Snook was delighted. "It totally vindicates what we try to achieve as a club, spending Monday evenings paracticing the ancient art of judo, based on ju-jitsu - focusing on technique rather than competion fighting, which is more the focus of other clubs and more suited to the natiional centres of excellence like Camberley and Dratford," he said.

Club chairman Karen Fench was also delighted at their success."Their judo was of a very high standard," Karen said. "And it is good to see players practicing so many different katas - it does not happen in many clubs." "It is really good to see Kathryn and Helen rewarded for the effort they put in to their judo."

Kathryn and Helen now join the national squad to represent England and will undertake additional training with the national team in Portsmouth.

The club sent two players to their first competition and they both came back with medals - Joshua Howlett earned a bronze medal and Edward Gerwat a silver at the Yellow Belt and Under open event in Worthing.

Coach Ilona Few said she was very pleased with the effort and committment shown by both players and she was sure they would benefit from the experience at furture events.

The club now boast 75 members, ranging in age from five to 75. The quality is there too - ten hold prestigious black belts.

The chichester club pride themselves on being inclusive and with family values. The coaches are volunteers and the committee includes parents and youg people. The club was founded by president Ralph Smith and others in 1970 and has been based in the New Park Centre since the building became a community centre in 1973.

The club achieved Clubmark status in 2005 from Sport England, which means the club is well run and all coaches are qualified, insured and trained in child protection, equity and first aid, proper risk assessments have been carried out to ensure safety and the club is child-friendly and with a proper structure. The club was honoured by the Bristish Judo Association two years agao with the first-eveer silver Clubmark award, recognising continuing progress and development.

The club is recognised as a centre of sporting excellence by Chichester District Council and now Sussex Sports, both of whom have shortlisted it as club of the year.
